First stage of the project for the nomination of Elpas Forest (Mount Moroto, in Karamoja) as a UNESCO

The project which has been followed with commitment by this Embassy in the past two years, in support for the nomination of the Elpas Forest (Monte Moroto, Karamoja) as a UNESCO "Man and Biosphere Programme" site, is moving towards its realization.

The Ambassador hosted two meetings at his Residence. The first one, on Friday 28th February, during which besides the Ambassador and the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, a representative of UNDP (project partner), the Diocese of Moroto and the team (from the University of Padua)- that will conduct the feasibility study for the candidacy of the Elpas Forest as a UNESCO site, took the floor. The second meeting, on Monday 02 March, led to the signing of an official agreement between UNDP and the Diocese of Moroto.

Should the candidacy succeed, the above geographical site would be the first of its kind in the whole of African continent and would make it possible to preserve, not only the environmental uniqueness of the place, but also to launch a sustainable development plan for the local community, often tormented by micro-conflicts for the management of scarce resources.
