{"id":4397,"date":"2026-07-13T15:13:02","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T12:13:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambkampala.esteri.it\/?p=4397"},"modified":"2026-07-13T15:19:02","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T12:19:02","slug":"expiration-of-the-validity-of-paper-identity-cards-for-travel-abroad-as-of-august-3rd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambkampala.esteri.it\/en\/news\/dall_ambasciata\/2026\/07\/expiration-of-the-validity-of-paper-identity-cards-for-travel-abroad-as-of-august-3rd\/","title":{"rendered":"Expiration of the validity of paper identity cards for travel abroad as of August 3rd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As of August 3, 2026, the paper version of the identity card will no longer be valid for travel abroad, regardless of the expiration date printed on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Decree-Law no. 108 of June 26, 2026, introduced several important changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A paper identity card that has not yet expired may still be used for identification purposes when dealing with the Italian public administration and public service providers, including Consulates;<\/li>\n<li>In cases of urgency, Italian municipalities may issue a provisional identity document valid for travel abroad; this document is non-renewable and valid for a maximum of six months. Please note that this document may not be accepted by certain foreign countries; check entry requirements on the *<a href=\"https:\/\/www.viaggiaresicuri.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Viaggiare Sicuri<\/a>* website;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Contact your nearest Consulate for information on how to obtain the new Electronic Identity Card (CIE): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/ministero\/struttura\/laretediplomatica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/ministero\/struttura\/laretediplomatica\/<\/a>. Dedicated appointments are available for individuals who do not possess other forms of identification.<\/p>\n<p>Since June 1, Italian citizens residing abroad (registered in the AIRE) have also been able to apply for the CIE at any Italian municipality, in accordance with Law no. 11 of January 19, 2026.
