Success of the Italian Cultural and Culinary Week in Kampala (20 – 25 November 2017)

The Embassy of Italy organized The Italian Cultural & Culinary Week in Kampala from 20 to 25 November. The two main themes of this year’s edition were: “Italians at the Movies; Italians in Cinema” and “The Extraordinary Italian Taste”. These were implemented through a series of gastronomic, cinematographic, musical and training events that attracted hundreds of interested people (Ugandan Authorities, Italian and international communities, Ugandans, media).

The week opened on Monday 20th November with an evening event at the Residence of the Ambassador of Italy, featuring a gala dinner and the screening of the latest film “L’Equilibrio” directed by Vincenzo Marra, an Italian film director. The film had just been presented at the last Venice Film Festival. The director honoured us with his presence.
The dinner was prepared by the Chef of the Italian Residence together with students from the Catering Department of the COWA – Centenary Vocational Training School in Nsambya (Kampala), where the Embassy had organized an Italian cooking course in collaboration with the Italian NGO AVSI and the Italian restaurant LINOVE.

On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday several public events were organized together with the Cultural Association of the Italians in Uganda (CAIU), the Honorary Consulate of the Swiss Confederation, 7 Hills International School and Restaurant Cafe’ Latte. These consisted in the projection of three movies – “Smetto Quando Voglio” (by S. Sibilia), “Il Capitale Umano “ (P.Virzi’) and Heidi (by A. Gsponer: an event specifically dedicated to children) – and an evening of the Italian cuisine and music (When in Rome…). At all the above events, the Italian gastronomic specialties and wines were served.

On Thursday 23rd morning, Vincenzo Marra lectured photography/videography to students of Bwaise Business & Vocational Institute (BBVI) under the EU Delegation funded project “Strengthening Social Cohesion & Stability in Slums Population” implemented by AFFCAD and IOM.

On Friday 24th morning, Vincenzo Marra held a seminar on film direction at the Kampala Film School (screening of his “L’Equlibrio”, open to filmmakers and critics, at Goethe Zentrum in the afternoon but had to be cancelled due to extreme weather conditions).

In the evening of Friday 24th, an Italian gala dinner was organized at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel followed by the screening of Vincenzo Marra’s film “La Prima Luce” (presented in 2015 in Venice).

During the week, the Embassy and the Entebbe CoRSU Hospital launched a fundraising campaign to help the disabled children.

From 20th to 27th November the Italian restaurants Mediterraneo and DiVino, accompanied their customers on a culinary journey to learn about the cuisines and wines typical of some Italian regions.

The Embassy of Italy is most grateful to its partners, without whom the program of the events would not have been possible, namely: AVSI, Bayimba, Café Latte, CAIU – Cultural Association of Italians in Uganda, CityTyres, Honorary Consulate of the Swiss Confederation, CoRSU, COWA – Centenary Vocational Training School, DiVino, Emirates, Goethe-Zentrum, The Mediterranean, Inspire Africa, Kampala Film School, LINOVE Restaurant, Sheraton Kampala Hotel, 7 Hills International School.

A special thanks goes to Vincenzo Marra for gracing us with his presence and his art.
